Strange Days

In May 2020, as France emerged from its first COVID-19 lockdown, travel was once again permitted within a maximum radius of 100 kilometres from home. An administrative measure drew an invisible circle around each of us.

I chose to follow that line : every photograph in this series was made at exactly 100 kilometres from my home, never crossing this abstract boundary. More than a constraint, the rule became a way of exploring the landscape. A political decision, traced onto a map, suddenly gave rise to a tangible geography of roads, fields, woodland edges, villages and moments of waiting.

This series grew out of that experience: walking a line that exists only in the mind of the person who chooses to follow it.
